Rosehaven Alpaca Stud is committed to the improvement of mid fawn to brown huacaya alpacas. We see the future of the alpaca is as a fibre producing animal. Accordingly our breeding goals are based on producing animals with a fine, dense fleece with low micron count. To support the fleece, the animals must also have a sound frame, excellent conformation and sturdy constitution. We also highly value animals that have a sound temperament and mothering instinct.
Our current specific breeding goals are:
- Sound disposition, healthy and happy with a quiet and easy to manage temperament
- Alpacas that are highly fertile, easy birthing, efficient at lactating, early maturing and weaning
- Correct confirmation with substance of bone
- Solid mid size frame (females 60-70 kg, males 70-80 kg)
- Triangular head shape of good size
- Neck length in good proportion to body size
- Solid colours that are primarily in the range of mid fawn to brown
- Fleeces that are:
- Fine (16-18 microns)
- Dense (50+ follicles per mm)
- Long in staple (<120mm/year)
- Uniform in colour and micron
- Excellent crimp style
Conformation, Disposition and Fleece: What does that mean?
Conformation: Structure, the shape or proportionate dimensions of the animal.
Our view is that proper alpaca conformation goes beyond what meets the eye. It is important that alpaca exhibit positive characteristics that enhance their ability to survive and reproduce. Thus, we place importance on female alpacas’ ability to produce milk and to give easy births. We believe that fork follows function. Our breeding programme aims to build traits related to fibre, health and reproduction. As livestock, alpacas should be easy to care for, have a high reproduction rate, and produce dense, fine fibres. Our alpacas are proving themselves in these areas.
Disposition: Prevailing tendency, mood or inclination.
Alpacas should be easy to work with and handle. In addition to the yearly shearing, and routine maintenance procedures, alpacas should tolerate human contact at all times. While highly intelligent, and capable of being trained, there is sound evidence that an alpaca’s basic disposition is heritable. Our alpaca breeding programme aims to preserve the gentle disposition of our foundation heard while improving upon the fibre characteristics that are the source of the intrinsic worth of alpacas.
Fleece: The coat of wool covering a wool-bearing animal.
Alpaca fleece was once considered a gift of the Andean gods. It is the alpaca’s fleece that gives the alpaca its intrinsic value. Three attributes contribute value of an alpaca fleece: fineness (measured in microns), staple length, and yield. Our breeding programme is aimed at increasing fleece yield while preserving low micron. Our herd of coloured huacaya alpacas all possess very good fibre qualities and our breeding programme has been successful in improving these qualities. We value colour in our alpacas and at Haven Alpaca you will find a rainbow of colours from mid fawn to brown.
